CIFOR is a non-profit scientific organization that conducts research on the use and management of forests with a focus on tropical forests in developing countries. Since 2007, it has trained over 220 Congolese forest experts in partnership with the University of Kisangani and facilitated field work in the Yangambi Biosphere Reserve. Its engagement it the landscape increased in 2017 with the launch of the project FORETS.
Activities in Yangambi
  • Promoting local economic development and conservation activities in the Yangambi landscape.
  • Training PhD and master’s students in sustainable forest management at the University of Kisangani.
  • Conducting research on wild meat and biodiversity, formalization of the logging sector, sustainability of wood fuel value chains, amongst others.
  • Leading environmental education and awareness-raising programs.
  • Supporting better forest governance and management of natural resources.
  • Restoration of degraded land for electricity production.
